Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks says residents in Webster and Penfield who live close to the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant face risks many other Monroe County residents don't necessarily face.

She says they want to make sure those residents are "armed and ready" if there is an emergency at the plant.

So the County, in conjunction with other agencies and Wegmans, is distributing free Potassium Iodide or (KI) pills to residents that live in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone of the plant.

Brooks says Potassium Iodide, or KI, protects the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine that could be released in the event of an emergency.

She says the last time the pills were distributed was in 2007, and they are scheduled to expire soon.

Penfield and Webster residents can pick up the pills at the Wegmans stores on Empire Boulevard, Holt Road and Penfield Road through the end of the month.

Here's a link to the county's website with more information on Potassium Iodide.
