Jeff & Joan Beal Will Donate $2 Million To The Eastman School Of Music

Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal and vocalist Joan Beal have committed to donating $2 million to the Eastman School of Music, which is their alma mater.

The money will launch the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media. The institute will provide students with instruction and experiences to prepare them for jobs where they can write, produce and perform music for film and contemporary media.

Jeff Beal will serve as artistic director of the institute. “Not only is there a need for education in composition across contemporary media platforms, there is a growing trend for orchestras and ensembles to perform this music in the concert hall,” Beal said in a statement. “Film music provides narrative connection, engages listeners, and can introduce new audiences to the power of the symphony orchestra."

Beal received his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastman in 1985, and studied composition and trumpet. His work includes having composed the theme for the Netflix series "House of Cards." He has received international recognition as a film composer. Joan Beal has sung on more than 100 film scores and also did the operatic vocals on House of Cards.

“Music and musical styles continue to evolve, and the lines between genres continue to merge and dissolve,” said Jamal Rossi, the Dean of the Eastman School of Music. “Jeff’s and Joan’s commitment will ensure that Eastman students have the preparation and versatility to engage with many styles of music and opportunities.”

Jeff Beal was a guest in April on Connections with Evan Dawson on WXXI. You can listen to the interview here.
