Irondequoit Seeking To Fire Officer After Social Media Comments

The Irondequoit Town Board unanimously passed a resolution Thursday seeking to terminate a police officer who allegedly posted racially insensitive comments to his Facebook account.

The officer was put on administrative leave after a local blog posted screenshots of alleged racially insensitive remarks and pictures he posted on social media. Time Warner Cable News reports that according to town officials, the investigation verified the posts were posted by the officer.

There is a process the town and officer must go through before the termination is official, which includes a response from the officer.

Town officials said they are not naming the officer because it is a personnel matter. For now, he is on unpaid leave.

Irondequoit Police Chief Richard Tantalo told Time Warner Cable News it was a difficult and disappointing day for the department.

"I have the full faith and confidence in the officers that work in this particular police agency," Tantalo said. "On a daily basis, they truly dedicate their dedication to service."

The officer, when contacted by phone Thursday by Time Warner Cable News, said he would not comment at this point on the situation, but weeks ago, said the incident was “overblown and exaggerated”
