Irondequoit Police are investigating the discovery of human remains in Durand Eastman Park.
Police tell Time Warner Cable News, that at about 8 a.m. on Sunday, a hiker called in to say human remains appeared to have been found about 60 feet off the embankment on North Kings Highway.
Police called in the Medical Examiner’s office and authorities say an anthropologist will likely help in the excavation process.
Officials said since they are skeletal remains they could have been there for a couple of years or even longer and they will have to identify the body by dental records or DNA.
Sgt. Mark Bean is quoted by TWC News as saying that at this point, police are not aware of any open missing persons case from that time period, but they will work with a missing persons data bank as part of the investigation.
The cause of death is still to be determined.
