Horse In Wayne County Tests Positive For EEE

Health officials have confirmed a positive report of the virus called Eastern Equine Encephalitis or 'EEE' in a horse in the Wayne County Town of Rose.

EEE is a rare disease spread by infected mosquitos, and it can cause inflammation of the brain. It is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, and it can affect humans, birds, horses and other mammals. Medical officials say it does not occur directly from person to person, mammal to mammal or mammal to person.

Wayne County health officials urge residents in that area to take precautions, including limiting outdoor activities where mosquitos are most active, and clearing areas in your yard or house where water can pool.
