A not-for-profit agency that takes veterans to Washington, D.C. to tour memorials, Arlington National Ceremony, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and more, is looking to add more passengers to its next trip.
Honor Flight Rochester is seeking more World War II veterans to make the trip, according to HFR President Richard Stewart.
"We think we've just scratched the surface. There are a lot more veterans out there, but in particular we want to go oldest era first. We want to get all the World War II's, then Korea then on to Vietnam," he said.
Stewart says they had 12 World War II veterans booked on the last flight on Father's Day and they've already received applications from 16 World War II era veterans for the next Honor flight, scheduled for September 9th and 10th.
"These veterans, especially the aging ones, you know, this is a trip they need to take. They may not realize it, if not for themselves then for their families," he said.
Stewart says it's a 6 a.m. flight to Baltimore, where the veterans board motor coaches with patriot guard escort to Washington, D.C. to tour the World War II memorial, and 8 others over the course of the day.
They'll also tour the Tomb of the Unknowns at the Arlington National Cemetery.
There's also a banquet with 125 people.
Stewart says the flights represent a long delayed thank you for these veterans for their service.
The next Honor Flight is September 9th and 10th.
