Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Students and staff at Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Monday welcomed their new president.

Gregory Vincent, a New York City native who graduated from the Geneva-based colleges in 1983, replaces Mark Gearan, who held the job since 1999.Gearan left recently and will be ‘president in residence’ at Harvard University.

Vincent is the 27th president of Hobart College and 16th president of William Smith College. The two schools were founded as separate colleges, but are now administered jointly in Geneva.

On Monday, Vincent said that he is “thrilled to return to my alma mater in this role and excited to work in collaboration with the Hobart and William Smith community as we advance the colleges.”

Vincent is described as a national expert on civil rights, social justice and campus culture.

He most recently served at The University of Texas at Austin as Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement, W.K. Kellogg Professor of Community College Leadership and Professor of Law.

Vincent is the first alumnus to serve as president of Hobart and William Smith.
