Highland Hospital Breaks Ground On Expansion Project

urmc.rochester.edu

Highland Hospital in Rochester held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its expansion project on Monday.

The facility is adding a two-story building that representatives say will be used to enhance patient care. Mike Zanghy  is the Director of Facilities at Highland Hospital. He says one objective of the project is to create bigger operating rooms, so they can house more advanced medical devices.

"There's need for space. All this electronic equipment has to be arranged around the patient, and this allows us to put all that around the patient and still allow the caregivers to work around that equipment…A big for-instance would be our robotic surgical equipment. That takes up quite a bit of space because there's a console for the surgeon, and then the actual robot is actually rolled up to the patient."

The project will also create space for more private treatment rooms, which Zanghy says can help prevent the spread of disease among patients. Construction is expected to last between 12 to 18 months. They are still awaiting approval from the Department of Health.
