The Greece Police Department is currently housed in a building on Island Cottage Road which was formerly a water treatment facility, according to Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich.

"The chief's office currently sits on what was the center of a waste treatment plant portion of the building. I've got to tell you, in the summer those flies get pretty big. They're so large the chief tells me sometimes they tell him to get out of the room."

Today, officials broke ground on the new home for the police department, near the Town Hall on Vince Tofany Boulevard.

Reilich says the $9 million dollar state-of-the art facility which will be nearly 30 thousand square feet, and will house both the patrol and investigative units.

He says it will also have multiple holding cells, evidence storage area, training facility and interrogation rooms.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phalen says it will be a quantum leap from their current headquarters.

"We have a very professional, high quality police department.  But you wouldn't know it from looking at our building.  So it's more of a representation of what I know exists, the finest, most professional police officers in the state of New York.  And you'll feel that when you walk in the front door now."

Reilich says they can afford the project without any additional burden on tax payers.

It's expected the new police headquarters will be completed early next year.
