With less than 2 weeks before the start of school, officials in the Greece School District are working to repair a problem with the roof of one of its middle schools.
A statement from officials at Aracadia Middle School in Greece notes that the roof of that school, which was damaged during the March windstorm, is currently being replaced.
Employees at the school recently found a problem with the fireproofing material installed on the underside of the roof deck above the second floor ceiling. Officials say in some areas, sections of the fireproofing material may have become dislodged.
An outside engineering firm was called in to check out the situation, and their findings show several areas of significant damage. District officials say they have not yet determined the extent of the problem, but in the interest of safety, they cannot use the second floor of Arcadia at this time.
The district says it’s working to find solutions that will keep all students and staff together on the Arcadia campus. That plan will be shared with families during sixth grade orientation, during sixth grade orientation at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, in the Arcadia High School Auditorium.
There will be two additional information sessions for parents of seventh- and eighth-graders on Thursday, August 31 – one at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
The district says it is committed to opening the Arcadia Middle School on September 6th as scheduled.
