Western New York Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says federal grants awarded today to several local non-profits and municipalities will help deliver the promise of the Erie Canal.

The grants totaling 30-thousand dollars come from the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

Executive Director Bob Radliff says those grants will be matched by an additional $330-thousand dollars in private and public funds raised by the grantees.

He says the grants go to nonprofits and municipalities with the goal of preserving, promoting and sharing the extraordinary heritage of the Erie Canal

The four area recipients are:

--Rochester Museum and Science Center received $7,000 to create an educator’s guide that connects the museum’s various canal-themed exhibitions and raises awareness of the Erie Canal’s impact on the region.

--The Village of Brockport received $7,000 to create a mural and related educational programming that depicts the Village’s history and relationship with the Erie Canal.

--Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, North Tonawanda, received $2,025 to optimize its website for multiple platforms.

--National Women’s Hall of Fame, Seneca Falls, received $5,075 to develop designs for the Center for Great Women to be housed in the former Seneca Knitting Mill.
