Geva announces 2017-2018 season

Geva Theatre Center has announced its 2017-2018 Season, which is also Geva’s  45th year of providing professional theater.

“Our 45th Anniversary takes place at a time when Geva Theatre Center can illuminate the stories and characters that are essential to our vibrant American culture,” said Artistic Director Mark Cuddy. “The richness of contemporary life and the heroes of history, both here and abroad, weave through the eleven plays and musicals that have been carefully chosen for Rochester. I am proud that Geva will help lead the Rochester region into the future with humanity and creativity. Now, more than ever, we need to come together and share these theatrical experiences.”

The shows include:

In the Heights- This musical by the creator of Hamilton was the winner of 4 Tony Awards (including Best Musical and Best Original Score) and a Pulitzer Prize-nominee.

Smart People-On the eve of the 2008 Presidential Election, four intellectuals find themselves embroiled in a complex web of social and sexual politics.

The Agitators- tells of the enduring but tempestuous friendship of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.

The Other Josh Cohen- musical comedy by David Rossmer and Pittsford native Steve Rosen was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards and the Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.

Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End- Starring “Suburban Outlaw” and D&C columnist Pam Sherman, this is the story behind America’s favorite average housewife who championed the lives of women.

The Diary of Anne Frank- one of the most important literary works of the 20th century.  

Heartland- Featuring Artistic Director Mark Cuddy as ‘Harold’ in his return to the Geva stage.

One House Over –a new comedy by about boundaries, power, privilege and anxiety.

Steel Magnolias- a story of love, loss, and enduring friendship.

Special productions include:

-A one night only reading of Hamilton-written by West Bloomfield native Mary Hamlin and stage and screen star George Arliss, Geva will present a one-night only reading of the play on Monday, September 20.

-The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns-December 7 – 24

-Fringe Festival- Sept. 14 – 23, The Fielding Stage will once again be a venue for the KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival, hosting a wide variety of performances.

Festival of New Theatre-Oct. 24 – Nov. 5 A two-week showcase of new plays and projects that are currently in Geva’s developmental process.

A Christmas Carol-Nov. 22 – Dec. 24
