Getting "WISE" to West Irondequoit School District Issues.

A group has formed to look at ways to raise funds to save programs at risk of being cut in the West Irondequoit School District.

The district's spending plan twice failed to get the needed super majority of voters needed to pass, so nearly 1.5-million dollars was cut from the budget.

Cuts could come to modified sports programs, drama presentations, or the Helmer Nature Center, among other things.

Irondequoit resident Bradley Huber is an organizer with WISE, or West Irondequoit Supports Education.

He says they're meeting Monday night to brainstorm on ways to save programs and create long term solutions so the district doesn't face this kind of situation again.

He says the group advocates getting rid of the state's GAP Elimination Adjustment formula, which reduces the amount of state aid districts are entitled to.  Members of WISE feel that is at the root of the problem in West Irondequoit and many other districts.

The group meets at 6 Monday night at Irondequoit United Church of Christ.
