Geneseo's Ice Knights Fall To Wisconsin-Stevens-Point

(WXXI News & AP) The SUNY Geneseo Hockey team, which had rallied in the face of tragedy following the death of a teammate, saw its run in the NCAA Division III tournament come to an end Friday night in Lake Placid.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point defeated Geneseo 5 to 1.

The Geneseo Ice Knights were working to win the school’s first NCAA title in memory of senior defenseman Matt Hutchinson, who was a victim in a double-murder suicide in January along with his friend, Kelsey Annese  who had played on the Geneseo women’s basketball team.

The Geneseo hockey team was eliminated Friday in the semi-finals for the second time in the last three years.

Hutchinson, or "Hutch," as he was known,  has been part of the impressive run. His jersey has been at every game and he had a stall in the locker room at Herb Brooks Arena as the team prepared for the biggest game of the season, hoping to maybe pull off another "Miracle on Ice" in a building made forever famous by the gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team.
