Geneseo Police are describing a murder-suicide as being the event that led to the stabbing deaths of three people early Sunday morning in the village.

They say that 24 year old Colin Kingston of Geneseo,  who recently broke up with 21 year old Kelsey Annese of Webster after a three year relationship, had been distraught when he went to the house that Annese lived in on Wadsworth Street.

Officers believe that Kingston found Annese and 24 year old Matthew Hutchinson of British Columbia in the house and there was an altercation.  Authorities say it happened quickly and Annese and Hutchinson both suffered fatal stab wounds with a large knife. Police say it is possible Hutchinson and Annese had been asleep at the time, but Officer Jeff Szczesniak says that is just speculation.

Police say Kingston then called his father,  indicating he had harmed his ex-girlfriend, and Kingston then killed himself with the knife.

Kingston’s father called 911, and police arrived there at about 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Annese was on the SUNY Geneseo basketball team. Hutchinson played on the school’s hockey team and was also a volunteer firefighter. Kingston was a former Geneseo student.

An obviously shaken SUNY Geneseo President Denise Battles, who just assumed the presidency last year, said the deaths are “heartbreaking”  and said it is a “profoundly sad day.”

Classes will resume Tuesday as scheduled, although tomorrow's men's and women's basketball games have been postponed.

There will be a remembrance service Wednesday evening at SUNY Geneseo.
