Emmeline the bear will resume her place on Main Street in Geneseo Wednesday.
The bronze bear that graced the center of the village's iconic fountain since 1888 will come out of storage as the fountain is reassembled following an accident over a year ago.
A collision with a truck destroyed the granite base of the fountain. That has been remade. Village mayor Richard Hatheway says some steps have been taken to try to prevent any future accidents.
"We've installed some lights on poles on all four sides of the fountain to shine down on the fountain. We've also put some pedestrian crosswalk signs there, and that seems to have brought a little more attention to the fountain."
Hatheway said the "bear fountain" is Geneseo. It appears on the logo on the village fire trucks and police cruisers. And SUNY Geneseo alumni say the fountain is one of their lasting images of the village.
"Number one was sunsets over the valley in terms of their remembrances of things Geneseo. The second was the bear fountain."
A ceremony may be planned to rededicate the fountain, but one is not scheduled yet.
