Gananda School AC Unit Tests Positive For Legionella Spores

The Gananda School District in Wayne County has sent a letter to parents letting them know that water in the rooftop air conditioning unit at the Richard Mann Elementary School has tested positive for Legionella spores.

That was found during testing that is now required of  buildings with that type of air conditioning cooling tower after an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease in New York City in August.

But Gananda officials emphasize that the system at the elementary school is a closed system and does not interact with any water used within the school.

As a precaution, students on Friday were taken to the high school. But state health officials say the building is safe, and students will be back in there on Monday.

The district is already taking steps to complete a cleaning process to kill the bacteria and the system will be tested weekly to ensure that the environment remains safe.

School officials do not expect any students to become ill, but they say as a precaution, any of them who have symptoms such as a cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle aches and headaches should seek medical attention.
