A funeral mass was held Tuesday for former Monroe County Executive Tom Frey, who passed away over the weekend after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Services were held at St. Michael’s Church on North Clinton Avenue.

Friends spoke of Frey’s many accomplishments in his political years.

He served on the Rochester School Board, State Assembly and Board of Regents.

Frey was Monroe County Executive from 1987 to 1991.

Former Mayor Bill Johnson said he benefited greatly from Frey's counsel when Johnson became mayor.

"Everything they said about him in this church today was true. He was really a caring person, shared his experience and was always encouraging. I just thank God for the life that he lived and the service he gave to this community," he said.

Frey oversaw an expansion of Rochester's airport, MCC opening a downtown campus, he introduced the county's recycling program and the start of the landfill in Riga.

Frey also authored legislation in the State Assembly that allowed for right turns on red in New York, and curb cuts to make sidewalks more accessible.

Sister Grace Miller of the House of Mercy says she and Tom went way back, attending the same grammar school and high school in Corning.

"You know it just brings back all these memories of my hometown Corning, New York.  And seeing his family again today was wonderful," she said.

Kate Frey described her father has someone who was an advocate for the fair treatment of everyone, especially children.

Frey was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
