The United Way of Greater Rochester has appointed Fran Weisberg its new President and CEO.

She succeeds Peter Carpino, who is retiring.

She's the first female to hold the post.

Weisberg says her previous experience as head of Lifespan and The Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency will help her in her new position.

She says she got competitors to collaborate, and says that approach can help solve community problems like like poverty, failing schools and inadequate housing.

Weisberg  says going forward, the United Way will seek to achieve a collective impact, creating a common agenda for the community.

Weisberg says partnering with the state of New York will result in state and federal dollars that will be reallocated to help move people out of poverty.

The United Way of Greater Rochester recently kicked off this year's campaign, with a goal of 24-million dollars, down from 25 and a half million last year.

Weisberg says the old United Way corporate giving model, of relying on the "big 3," Kodak, Xerox and Bausch and Lomb, is just not sustainable.

Weisberg starts her new job May 1st.
