The Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester is hosting a community forum on medical marijuana this week.
The organization's executive director, Holly Anderson, says the event on Wednesday is free for people who want to know more about what to expect as New York State gets ready to make marijuana available for those with specific illnesses.
"After the passage of this law, when the Governor signed it on July 5, we started receiving telephone calls from people we who did not know were concerned about this in the community; folks with a variety of different diseases “, Anderson said. “ Many of them are already using cannabis in their own way."
Anderson says one woman reported self-medicating with marijuana for treatment of her fibromyalgia. That is not one of the approved conditions for access to the drug in New York State.
The forum is scheduled for Wednesday, August 27 at 7 p.m. in Building 4 at Monroe Community College. A panel will include a University of Rochester researcher, state senators, and a cancer survivor.
