Focus on Fire Safety in the Kitchen

Officials say there have been nearly 500 kitchen fires in Rochester so far this year.

And kitchen fires are the number one cause of home fires in the country, with over 400 reported each day.

Rochester Fire Chief Salvatore Mitrano says they are preventable.

He says people should focus on cooking in the kitchen, avoid distractions like talking on the phone, don't cook while impaired, don't leave food cooking in the kitchen unattended, and keep children a safe distance from the oven or stove -- a least three feet.

At City Hall on Monday, Mayor Tom Richards proclaimed October 7th through the 12th as "National Fire Prevention Week."
