Flu cases still prevalent in the region

The flu season may have peaked, but there are still some big numbers coming out in the latest data from the Monroe County Health Department.

For the week ending March 24th, there was an additional death, bringing the total number of deaths related to flu up to 15 for the season. And the number of confirmed flue cases increased by 281 to 6,194 cases.

Health department spokesman John Ricci says flu often can continue into April, but these numbers are larger than usual.

“It’s probably unusual to have this much flu, this late.  This year has been just a long, tough flu season. It’s started early and it’s really lingered late, and we’re still at a point where there’s still more flu activity than is typical for this time of year.”

Ricci says it’s important to still practice good hygiene, like washing your hands often, and staying home if you have flu symptoms.

Monroe County tracks the flu season from October through April.
