Filmmaker searches for answers following his father's death and mother's suicide

Kartemquin Films

Rochester's Reel Mind Film Series opens tonight.

The annual event showcases films and performances about mental illness, addiction, and brain disorders. The goal is to address the social stigma of mental illness while providing a message of hope that recovery is possible.

Tonight's screening is the documentary film "Unbroken Glass."

It's a very personal journey for Chicago filmmaker Dinesh Das Sabu, who is trying to unravel a mystery.

Who were his parents and how can he find peace after he was orphaned at the age of 6 when his father died of cancer and his mother, who had schizophrenia, died by suicide a month later?

Dinesh, the youngest of five siblings, was raised by his older sisters. This all happened in an age and culture when mental illness was not only often misunderstood, but not talked about.

The screening of “Unbroken Glass” is at 7 p.m. tonight at the Cinema Theatre at 957 S. Clinton Avenue followed by a discussion with Das Sabu.
