On any given night in Rochester, as many as 100 families with children are homeless.
Kim Hunt-Uzelac of the Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN) says 50 percent of those families do include a working adult.
"They're just at the line where they make too much to get services from the government - rental subsidies - but they don't make enough to sustain housing," she said.
This weekend, 49 people will be spending a night in their cars at Asbury First United Methodist Church on East Avenue to raise awareness about family homelessness and raise money to provide support services for homeless families in Rochester.
"We do take in families every year directly from their cars, so there are families sleeping in their cars," Hunt-Uzelac said.
A network of RAIHN volunteers provides families living in poverty with tailored services including shelter, food, and personalized case management.
Organizers of this weekend’s event hope to raise $20,000 to fund those efforts. Donations can be made by visiting www.raihn.org.
