ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Energy efficiency programs are leading to big savings for state and local governments in New York.

The New York Power Authority reported Wednesday that $4 million has been saved in the first six months of 2014 after efficiency programs were implemented at 100 state and municipal facilities.

The efficiency measures have also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 14,650 tons per year, which the authority says is the equivalent of 3,000 vehicles on the road.

The improvements include more efficient lighting and heating and the creation of energy plans for cities including Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and several college campuses.
