Douglas Lowry, the Dean of the Eastman School of Music, has resigned for health reasons.
The 62 year old Lowry became the sixth Eastman School dean in 2007. The current executive associate dean, Jamal Rossi, will serve as dean until a national search is concluded.
Lowry led the biggest architectural transformation in the Eastman School's history, including the renovation of Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre and the construction of the east wing and Hatch Recital Hall.
Lowry is also a composer and his works have been commissioned by the RPO as well as the Cincinnati Symphony and the Louisville Orchestra among others.
University of Rochester President Joel Seligman called Lowry "an extraordinary leader" who was "an inspiration to Eastman's faculty and students..."
Lowry has also just been awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree. The Board of Trustees named him the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean Emeritus and awarded him the honorary doctoral degree which was presented to him on Monday.
