Driver suffers serious burns after incident at local racetrack

Spectrum News

A 69 year old Oswego man was burned when his race car caught fire Saturday evening near Geneva. Ontario County deputies say it happened at Paradise Speedway on Hayes Road.

They say that Michael Humphrey had just finished a practice session at the track with his Micro Sprint car. He drove off the track with no issues, but when he arrived back at his trailer, witnesses saw the car engulfed in flames.

Humphrey was trapped in the car and other racers and fans at the speedway rushed to his aid, extinguishing the fire and pulled Humphrey from the car.

He suffered third degree burns over much of his body and was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Hospital where he was admitted in guarded condition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
