GREECE, N.Y. (AP) The Russell Station power generation plant, an iconic landmark near the Lake Ontario shoreline outside Rochester, is being torn down.
Crews have begun demolishing the facility located in the Monroe County town of Greece. The plant opened in the late 1940s and was shut down by Rochester Gas and Electric eight years ago because of costly environmental requirements.
Utility officials say the buildings, roads and the two towering smoke stacks will be removed by mid-summer. Disturbed areas will be covered with topsoil and reseeded to create green space.
The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
