Dedication Ceremonies for New Downtown Bus Station

Alex Crichton

Federal, state and local officials gathered Monday for dedication ceremonies for Rochester's new 50-million dollar downtown transit center.

The center officially opens November 28th, and CEO Bill Carpenter calls it a "game changer," and the completion of the facility marks the transition from an outdated public transit model and routing system to one that is highly efficient.

He says in addition to the 55-thousand customers RTS serves daily, he believes a growing number of Rochesterians and visitors will begin to choose the bus because it's safe, convenient, efficient and affordable.

Among the amenities: heated flooring during the winter months, electronic displays of departure times, ticket vending machines, on-site security, and public and family restrooms.

The Federal Transit Administration, New York State Department of Transportation and the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority funded the center.

80 percent of the funding came from the FTA.

RTS is reminding people that they'll be offering free rides from the center from November 28th to the end of the year.
