Thousands of volunteers from companies, schools and other organizations went out into the community today to help out during the United Way of Greater Rochester's annual Day of Caring.

About 100 volunteers helped Foodlink pack and sort donated food for distribution at its headquarters on Mt. Read Boulevard.

Another 17 people went to Foodlink's Lexington Avenue Urban Farm, where Foodlink's Nathaniel Mich says 50 families are growing their own food there, about 50-thousand pounds of food.

He says another 500 to 600 pounds of food will come from the "hoop house," a kind of greenhouse.

Volunteers were helping build a new infrastructure, with beautification, spreading mulch and doing repairs.

"We have basically one and a half staff members assigned to working on this space. We just wouldn't be do these large, sort of capital improvements without volunteers," said Mich.

Margie Bassford works at Paychex and led her group volunteering at the farm.

"We wanted to do something outdoors where we were gardening and planting.  We like this project because it's also a part of the greater good where's there's a lot of hungry people who get to come and utilize the garden."

It was expected more than 7-thousand volunteers would be at nearly 500 locations helping out during today's Day of Caring.
