Cybersecurity Campaign at RIT

https://stopthinkconnect.org/

Public officials joined business leaders, students, and cybersecurity experts at Rochester Institute of Technology for a discussion on ways people and businesses can be vigilant and more secure online.

It’s called “Two Steps Ahead: Protect Your Digital Life.”

Director of Special Projects for the non-profit National Cyber Security Alliance, Kristin Judge, says they are emphasizing  adding a second layer of protection for accounts.

"It's called two-step authentication, and  it takes about 30 seconds to add it to an account, but it can keep the bad guy out."

Judge says cybersecurity is a shared responsibility right now, and we all need to be taking care of our accounts.

Spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York, Peggy Penders, says the event offered other tips for internet users to stay secure online.

"Keep your accounts up to date, really understand the importance of having clean machines, so monitoring your activities, your accounts, those that are active, or dormant, that you're doing the right things to delete them and not putting yourself at risk."

Penders says that identity theft is the number one crime reported in the country 15 years in a row now.
