A final community farewell for former Monroe County Sheriff Andy Meloni today.

Meloni will be laid to rest following a funeral at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Student Life Center at St. John Fisher College.

He lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 84. Meloni spent 45 years in the Sheriff's Department, eventually running for the top job in 1979. Meloni retired in 2001.

On its Facebook page, the Sheriff’s Department wrote this comment today:

Today we say goodbye to our former Sheriff Andy Meloni. Thank you to all who have expressed kind words over the last couple of days. We hope this will help provide some comfort to the Meloni family. Sheriff Meloni's legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of the members of the Sheriff's Office serving this community on a daily basis. Thank you Sheriff for your more than 40 years of service to our community. May you rest in peace
