First hour: The controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick's decision to sit during the national anthem
Second hour: The new film, Don't Think Twice
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is immersed in controversy after he refused to stand during the national anthem before a preseason game. Kaepernick told reporters, "I'm not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." Some say Kaepernick's actions are courageous and will help make a point and lead to change, but others say he disrespected the flag and veterans. We'll discuss both sides of the issue with our guests:
- Van White, civil rights attorney and president of the Rochester City School Board
- Chris Thompson, activist and engineer
Then in our second hour, we discuss the realities of friendship, especially when one friend becomes more successful than the rest of the group. It's the focus of the new film, Don't Think Twice, by comedian Mike Birbiglia. The film follows an improv team in New York City called The Commune, and chronicles how the group dynamic changes after one member leaves to be featured in a late night television show. We'll talk about what success and failure mean to different people, what it's like to dream...and the realization that sometimes you must give up, and we'll have a little fun discussing improv comedy. Our guests:
- John Forrest Thompson, educator, improviser, and creative consultant
- Caitlin Drago, owner of Inspire Improv and Coaching
- Liz Allen, improv coach and author of Improvising Better
- Jeffrey Sweet, playwright, performer, and author of Something Wonderful Right Away
