First hour: Glenn Kellogg on his proposal for Parcel 5
Second hour: Summer of Food - The future of American food and the book, Provence 1970
The City of Rochester is considering four proposals for the prime "Parcel 5" lot downtown. We've heard about two of the four: a performing arts center, and a mostly-green space. The third is a proposal from Glenn Kellogg, owner of Harts Local Grocers in Rochester. Per the Democrat & Chronicle, "Kellogg's plan would divide the center Midtown lot into 15 'bite-sized' parcels for smaller developers to build a more traditional downtown retail center." We'll sit down with Glenn Kellogg to discuss his vision for Parcel 5.
Then in our second hour, it's our final conversation in the Summer of Food series, and it's all about the future of American food. A book tells the story of a series of unlikely meetings in the winter of 1970, set in Provence. That's when, by chance, some of the most powerful voices in American food were passing through. Julia Child, MFK Fisher, James Beard, Richard Olney...and in that series of lunches and dinners, they debated how American food should be. More high-end, or more egalitarian? More snobbish, or less? More about hard-to-find ingredients, or more focused on the authenticity of flavor from the back yard? Author Luke Barr sifted through diaries and letters to piece together this story about how American food pivoted, bringing us to where we are today. Our guests:
- Luke Barr, author of Provence 1970
- Art Rogers, chef and owner of Lento restaurant
