Coming Up On Connections: Thursday, August 18th

NPR

First hour: NPR is eliminating online comments

Second hour: Summer of Food looks at the decline of cereal

NPR is eliminating online comments, joining a handful of other major news organizations to make the change. One major reason is that NPR finds Twitter and Facebook to be where the conversation has naturally gravitated to. But let's face it: online comments sections can occasionally become hives of nasty ad hominems, and worse. So is this a wise decision? Or does it limit audience interaction? Our guests will discuss it:

  • Julie Philipp, senior engagement editor for the Democrat & Chronicle
  • Seth Palmer, digital content manager at 13WHAM
  • Howard Ownes, publisher of The Batavian and the Wyoming County Free Press

Then, by many measures, cereal consumption is in decline. Is it the curse of John Harvey Kellogg, creator of the Corn Flake, and a man who wanted food and life to be bland? Or are we simply shifting to different kinds of cereal, less processed, at least marginally more healthy? Our guests include the man who literally wrote the book on American cereal:

  • Topher Ellis, cereal historian and co-author of The Great American Cereal Book: How Cereal Got its Crunch
  • Jane Andrews, nutrition and product labeling manager for Wegmans
  • Ian Szalinski, president and founder of Evoke Healthy Foods
