Coming up on Connections: Monday, November 23rd

NPR

First hour: What local organizations want from the UN climate talks

Second hour: Understanding recent news stories involving social media

The UN climate talks in Paris are coming, and the world is watching for the results. Will the talks produce something meaningful? Will nations around the world follow any new guidelines for slowing climate change? Several organizations are uniting to launch the Rochester March for Global Climate Action. We'll meet some of the organizers and talk about what they're hoping for in Paris. Our guests:

  • Sue Hughes-Smith, Rochester People’s Climate Coalition
  • Mary Lupien, organizer of the Climate Action March
  • Tim McGowan, founder and group co-lead for Citizens Climate Lobby of Rochester
  • Sandra Steingraber, distinguished scholar in residence, Department of Environmental Studies, Ithaca College

In our second hour: Social media has been a home for racism and misinformation of late. University of Rochester students are demanding that Yik Yak be shut down after numerous racist postings. This hour, we're working through a number of recent news stories related to social media with a pair of guests who can talk about how it works, and how the law comes into play with social media. In studio:

  • Mike Johansson, senior lecturer of communications at RIT and social media consultant at Fixitology
  • Scott Malouf, attorney whose practice is focused on the intersection of social media and the law
