Clergy to Urge City Council to Buy Police Body Cameras

studentsforliberty.org

The conversation about whether Rochester Police officers should wear body cameras continues tonight.

A group of clergy will be speaking out in favor of the idea before tonight's City Council meeting.

The Reverend Lewis Stewart of United Christian Leadership Ministry believes the cameras would create transparency in the interactions the police have with the public.  Stewart says it should not be left up to an individual officer when the cameras are turned on.

"We feel that with Rochester City Council and RPD there needs to be some protocol or policies put in place where those video cameras are running at all times in terms of when there is interaction with the public."

Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli has said that the city is studying the various aspects of  body cameras based on similar-sized departments that already use them.

The "Speak to Council" portion of portion of tonight's council meeting starts at 6:30 at City Council chambers, room 302-A at Rochester City Hall, 30 Church Street.
