Chemical Spill At A Xerox Plant

Some Xerox employees on Friday  had to be evacuated from a building on the Webster campus because of a chemical spill.

Officials tell us that a 55 gallon drum of a chemical used at Building 218 leaked as it was being moved within the plant. The chemical, called monochlorobenzene  is said to be a skin and eye irritant.

No one was injured, and fire and haz-mat crews were called to the scene. The chemical is flammable, but is not considered a major hazard.  About 100 employees were evacuated. They were allowed to return to the building a couple of hours later.
