Brockport Arts Festival Duck Derby Will Race Again

The Brockport Arts Festival's annual duck derby will be held this year after all.

Earlier this month, officials from the New York State Gaming Commission told organizers of the Festival that the derby violated state regulations because it took place on the Erie Canal, which is state-owned property.

Chairman of the Brockport Art Festival, Art Appleby said he wasn't surprised by the regulations.

"You know the regulation is simple. You can't have a raffle on state property. And I'm sure that's 100 years old. Its just that no one ever thought that, back then, that we would be floating rubber ducks on the New York State barge canal"

Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo's office laid out a number of steps that any organization can take in order to conduct a similar event on state property. They involve clearances from the local municipality and the New York State Gaming Commission.

The Brockport Duck Derby has run each summer for 20 years, and raises money for youth charities around the Brockport area.
