Brighton Police Discuss Recent Handgun Found At A Town Park

townofbrighton.org

Brighton Police are releasing more information about a handgun found in a town park. The handgun was discovered on June 6 by a woman walking in the park who called 911.

Police found the loaded 9mm gun and soon after, a local resident Chaim Diskind, told officers that the gun fell out of his holster. Police determined he is licensed and registered to carry the gun and later returned it to him. Diskind had been in the park to attend a youth soccer game.

Brighton Police notified county officials, and a judge issued an order suspending Diskind's pistol permit, ordering him to surrender his handguns and permit to the police. He has the right to request a formal hearing.

But Diskind was not criminally charged. Town Code does prohibit the possession of firearms in town parks, but Buckland Park did not have signage indicating that. After police consulted with the District Attorney's office, it was determined that no criminal charges could be filed.

But Brighton Police Chief Mark Henderson says this incident should serve a reminder that legal handgun ownership carries great repsonsibility and as a result, he is working with the school district on a gun safety program for the community. Signage about the prohibition of guns in town parks will also be implemented.
