Battery research and production ramps up at the Eastman Business Park

A pilot facility for developing new battery technologies at Eastman Business Park will be ramping up.

Empire State Development officials say that Kodak, in partnership with the consortium called "NY-BEST, " which is a collection of battery manufacturers and other entries, will be installing two assembly lines at the business park.

That site will produce products for the battery industry, and it's expected to create nine jobs by 2019  and officials are also hoping to attract more new businesses to the Eastman Business Park.

William Acker is executive director for NY-BEST, and he says this region is becoming known as a center for this sort of research.

“What we’ve created here in New York is an ecosystem that allows for startup companies and small companies to start by developing new technologies and put them over at RIT in the battery prototyping and then move them to Eastman Business Park where they can scale up and they can have volume manufacturing to meet customer needs.”

The state is offering incentives for the project through a grant of $1.2 million through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative.
