Rochester Institute of Technology hosted its sixth annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the Gordon Field House on Friday.

It brought veterans and civilians together in a show of support for those who have served, or are serving their country.

Major Kai Chitaphong is the national director of the Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership Initiative, or VITAL, in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He spoke on the "8 Keys to Veterans Success," outlining what universities can do to help veterans transition back to civilian life.

"Work with communities so they can identify resources, so veterans and their families as they transition to an area, that they have those resources to support them," he said.

VITAL provides on-campus clinical counseling for student veterans to help them reach their educational goals.

The breakfast event is chaired by the executive assistant to the president of RIT, Barry Culhane.

He says it's important to have such an event for people, most of whom haven't served in uniform.

"To really take a moment and say 'you know, we really appreciate these young men and women, and older men and women, who are willing to risk everything up to their lives for their country,'" he said. "If you know somebody who's served, drop them a note, send them an email, pick up the phone, and say thank you for your service, it means a lot, just those words."

Major Chitaphong's message on Veterans Day: remember those who served, those who are serving, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
