Today is National "Get Fit Don't Sit Day".
The American Diabetes Association initiative encourages everyone to get out of their chair at least every 90 minutes throughout the work day.
Beth Smythe, from the association's Rochester office, says the average person spends five hours and 41 minutes of their day sitting at work and research has shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time has been linked to obesity, and increased blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels.
"That lack of physical activity is compounding the risk for diabetes, and also its management, for people living with diabetes," she said. “"What we know is that this long period of sitting is like the new smoking. It's that detrimental to your health."
Symthe says they're challenging managers and supervisors to lead by example, and get out of their chairs frequently during the day “Because not only are you going to inspire, encourage and empower your employees, it will also demonstrate your commitment to corporate wellness and the community at large."
Several Rochester organizations are taking the challenge today, including Monroe Community College, ARC of Monroe County, and YourCare Health Plan.
