Amish Family Draws From Community, Faith to Overcome Trauma Following Girls' Abduction

watertown.twcnews.com

A northern New York Amish community is relying on its faith to get through the crisis that struck last week when two young sisters were abducted from their family's roadside stand.

The 12 and 7-year old escaped their captors and returned home about 24 hours later.

Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey were charged with kidnapping with the intent to physically or sexually abuse the girls.

We were wondering how this incident has impacted the tightly knit Amish community in St. Lawrence County.

We spoke to Karen Johnson-Weiner, a SUNY Potsdam professor of linguistics and anthropology. She's also an expert on the Amish culture and considers herself a friend of the girls who were kidnapped and their family.  She said she was out of town when she first heard about it.
