Agreement over the handling of concerns about construction at the MCC downtown campus

TWC News

There apparently has been some agreement over issues involving complaints by faculty about the MCC downtown Rochester campus.

The faculty association at MCC this week issued a statement complaining about the impact of ongoing construction at the Sibley Building, saying that in recent weeks there have been an increasing number of reported workplace hazards, things like water leaks and ceilings collapsing.

At one point, the association reportedly had urged college officials to demand that construction at Sibley stop for the rest of the semester.

But after a meeting on Wednesday, officials from the MCC administration, the faculty association, CSEA and the faculty senate recommended to college president Anne Kress that college operations continue at the Damon Campus for the Spring semester.

Officials say those concerns about conditions at Sibley were addressed by an agreement with the construction manager to restrict the work on the building to hours outside of the busiest instructional time.

They also note that most of of the heavy demolition will be completed by December.   And college officials say that concerns were allayed by sharing information about the results of air and water quality tests and information about other safety measures being taken.

MCC is in the process of getting ready to move their downtown operation to buildings on State Street that have been part of Kodak’s corporate headquarters. The new campus is expected to be ready for the fall semester of next year.
