3 Wayne County Deputies Disciplined; another resigns after probe into inmate escape

One Wayne County deputy has resigned and three others disciplined in the wake of a prison escape that happened in early July.

It happened on July 2nd, when officials say 25 year old Shawn Meacham impersonated a weekend inmate scheduled for release and he walked out of the jail facility.

Meacham was serving time for violating the conditions of his probation in connection with a burglary charge.  Meacham was captured the next day.

Sheriff Barry Virts says that after an internal investigation, his office concluded the escape should have been immediately detected and prevented. As a result, the shift sergeant has resigned to avoid disciplinary action.

Two other officers will face a 40 day suspension without pay.

Another officer  will be suspended 10 days without pay.  Virts says he is “extremely disappointed in the complacency and lack of attention to detail” but he says the department will move forward as a team so this doesn’t happen again.

Meachum has been charged with first degree escape and is being held without bail.
