Rochester, NY – A Sodus woman is the latest Lottery millionaire. Cynthia Foote will receive$50,000 a year for the next 20 years after winning the instant game $1,000,00 Hand. Foote, who plans to buy a house and take a vacation, purchased her winninginstant ticket from a Food Mart in the Wayne County town of Lyons.
Rochester, NY – A popular exhibit of photographs from the Vietnam War is finding a permanent home inRochester's International Museum of Photography.
The George Eastman House is will get to keep the photos from anexhibit titled, "Requiem: By the Photographers Who Died in Vietnam and Indochina.''
The exhibit's 300-plus photos were donated by Vietnam Warphotographers Tim Page and Horst Faas. Fass is the London-based seniorphoto editor for The Associated Press.
Rochester, NY – Shareholders of Rochester's RGS Energy Group and Albany-based Energy Easthave voted overwhelmingly to merge the two companies. The move effectivelymerges Rochester Gas and Electric and its Energetix subsidiary with New YorkState Electric and Gas and with five other energy companies acrossConnecticut and Maine.
It's a $2.4 billion merger, and the unified companies will serve three million utility customers.
Canandaigua, NY – The western New York town where a famousIndian treaty was signed is debating whether to retain the NativeAmerican nickname used by the local high school.
Canandaigua's sports teams have been known as the "Braves" formore than 50 years. The school district superintendent isrecommending that the name be kept.
Superintendent Stephen Uebbing advocates changing theschool's Indian logo, and also says Canandaigua schoolsshould expand their teaching of American Indian history.
Rochester, NY – Just two people showed up at a public hearing on the proposed Rochestercity and city school budgets last night. And they had nothing to say.
City and school district officials seemed divided in their comments between concern overlack of public interest, and the feeling that perhaps the lack of attendance means that voters are by-and-large satisfied with how the city does business.
Rochester, NY – Xerox is getting out of the inkjet printer business and eliminating hundredsof jobs, many of them in the greater Rochester area.
Xerox announced that it will close its Ontario County facilities inCanandaigua and Farmington, where a total of 425 people work, most of themunion employees.
Canandaigua has been the hub for inkjet operations, with a satellite officein neighboring Farmington.
Rochester, NY – Voters in the Marcus-Whitman School district have rejected a proposed22-million dollar budget plan. It was the second attempt to pass the budget, andits failure means the district will have to cut non-essential equipment and maybe programs.
The measure failed by 18 votes.
School board officials in the Ontario and Yates County district will meet soon to analyze the effects of anausterity budget.
