Rochester’s Connection to Higgs Boson Research

Scientists at the University of Rochester played a role in the research that led to the probable discovery of the Higgs boson.

The recent announcement that captured the attention of the scientific community is a significant step in understanding our universe.

On July 4, 2012, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva announced the discovery of a new particle that is “consistent with the Higgs boson,” believed to be responsible for giving other particles their mass.

Father-Child Reading Program Begins this Week

The goal for the Rochester City School District’s “Study Hour of Power” campaign is getting fathers to read to their kids.

Ernest Green is the father of a 9th grader at School of the Arts, and the author of the book “Pull Your Pants Up: A Message to All Our Sons.”

Green says many of today's young fathers grew up without a lot of direction and input from positive male influences.

Toy Hall of Fame Seeking Nominations

The deadline to nominate a toy for induction into the National Toy Hall of Fame at the Strong is quickly approaching.

Submissions for nominations must be received by the museum by July 31.

Chris Bensch, vice president for collections at the Strong, says nominees must have longevity and a recognition factor. He says they must also encourage learning, creativity and socialization.

City School District Hopes to Spur Father Involvement

The Rochester City School District is calling on fathers to step up and become more involved in the classroom.

The Fatherhood Initiative Campaign kicks off this week. Dads in the district will gather to brainstorm ways to be more effective in city schools.

Out of Jail: The Challenge for the RCSD When Students Return to Society

Every day, students who should be in a city school classroom, emerge from their Monroe County jail cells to learn.

“There's a range from kids that stay there for a week,” said Rochester City School Superintendent, Dr. Bolgen Vargs. “And there are kids that stay there for a longer period of time.”
