LEWISTON (AP) A special pheasant hunting weekend for hunters aged 12-15 is being held in western New York this weekend.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says junior hunters must be accompanied by a licensed adult. The youth hunt is intended to give young teens the opportunity to hone their skills when fewer hunters are afield.
About 770 adult pheasants will be stocked in the region immediately prior to the youth hunt weekend.
Regular pheasant hunting season opens next weekend.
A special permit is required to hunt at Joseph Davis, Golden Hill, and Wilson-Tuscarora State Parks in Niagara County.
Young hunters at Allegany State Park must pick up a free permit at the administration building.
