WXXI wins 4 NYS Associated Press awards

WXXI has won four awards from the New York State Associated Press Association.

The awards were handed out Saturday night at the AP Association’s annual banquet in Saratoga Springs.

WXXI won a 1st place award,  for the podcast and broadcast series called Exited, produced by reporters Karen Shakerdge and Veronica Volk, which came out of WXXI’s Inclusion Desk, and focused on eight young people with disabilities and their families, trying to navigate major life changes as those young people age into adulthood.

WXXI also won 3-second place awards including:

- Feature reporting: for a story reported by Beth Adams, called “Challenger Baseball Brings the Game to Life for Kids with Disabilities.”

-Continuing Coverage: for a story by Veronica Volk on “Lake Ontario Flooding,” an in-depth look at the massive flooding along the Lake Ontario Shoreline and the St. Lawrence Seaway in 2017.

-News Series- for a week-long series of reports by Denise Young and Jeanne Fisher called "Vietnam: The Rochester Experience"–which included multiple perspectives from veterans and others impacted by the Vietnam War.
